Backup restoration step by step guide

Can anybody suggest a step by step guide on backup restoration? How does Load from File work?

Hey!

The backup and restore feature in Ratio Settings mostly apply to the arrangement and configuration of the Tiles — in other words, the drawers (and where apps are stored in) will be saved into a file.

There are two distinct methods of backup and restore, if I am not mistaken:

Backing up and restoring externally

When backing up externally, a file (called backup.ratio) is generated and stored somewhere at your selection. To back up externally, to a cloud storage provider, for example:

  1. Head into Ratio Settings and tap on the “Backup” button next to “Backup configuration”.
  2. On the alert, tap on “Export…”
  3. A share menu will pop up. From here, you can choose where to share your file to.
    • The file will be shared as a single file called backup.ratio. This file is essential for restoration.

In order to restore from an external source, you should have access to an existing backup.ratio file. Preferably, ensure that the file is already downloaded locally onto your device and stored somewhere accessible; you’ll need to navigate to your file to restore. To restore:

  1. Head into Ratio Settings and tap on the “Restore” button next to “Backup configuration”.
    • Access to your local storage is required for this step to navigate through your files and find the backup.ratio file.
  2. On the alert, tap on “Load from file…”.
  3. On the file picker, navigate to the right file and select it.

If done correctly, your configuration should be mostly restored. For certain known issues, see below.

Backing up and restoring locally

When backing up internally, a file (called backup.ratio) is generated and stored in a set location on your local storage (on my device, it was under Internal storage/.ratio_backup/). This method is better if you’d like to uninstall Ratio but install and restore it sometime on the same device again. To back up internally:

  1. Head into Ratio Settings and tap on the “Backup” button next to “Backup configuration”.
  2. On the alert, tap on “Save”.
    • Access to your local storage is required for this step to create and save the file in the right directory.

The file will be saved on your local storage for restoration later on.

In order to restore from your local storage, you should have done the steps above before. To restore:

  1. Head into Ratio Settings and tap on the “Restore” button next to “Backup configuration”.
    • Access to your local storage is required for this step to navigate through your files and find the backup.ratio file.
  2. On the alert, tap on “Load existing”.

If successful, your configuration should be mostly restored. For certain known issues, see below.

When backing up and restoring, it is a known issue that your icon packs may be mismatched. To resolve this, reapply an icon pack in Ratio Settings.

I hope the explanation helps!
